Seasonal Concerns

We always ask customers what they’re doing with their sweeper and what sort of property it will be used on. The smaller sweepers are ideal for residential sidewalks with up to three inches of snow.

While a sweeper can see year-round use, the majority are used for clearing snow. Like other winter equipment, extreme cold conditions over an extended period can cause motors and hydraulic drives to freeze up. Temperature starts to be a concern below -15°, and no manufacturer designs their product for extended use in bitter cold temperatures -30° and beyond. We recommend heated storage to give your sweeper a chance to thaw out and dry off.

In the very coldest conditions, a hydrostatically driven sweeper may require a ten-minute warmup period. A gear driven brush is ready to roll as soon as the motor is started and running smoothly.

28" - 36" Sweeper Maintenance

Naturally, frequency of maintenance will vary with type and amount of use. Your sweeper will need an oil change annually at minimum, possibly air filter, spark plug, and lubrication of drive line components.

Keeping your oil, oil filters, and air filters clean will do wonders for the longevity of your sweeper. Keep in mind that any small engine not equipped with an oil filter needs its oil replaced with every 25 hours of operation.

For motors equipped with an oil filter, that figure extends to 100 hours. This is the typical manufacturer’s recommendation, but if you’re operating in very dusty, dirty conditions, you would be wise to change the oil more often. During spring cleanup in particular, clients “in-the-know” change their oil around the 50-hour mark.

It’s also wise when working in dusty conditions to keep a close eye on the condition of your air filters. This is an inexpensive part with a very important job. Inspect your air filters and give them a tap to shake loose accumulated debris. Don’t try to blow them clean; doing so actually makes them less effective. Check to be sure you can see light passing through the filter, and replace it if it fails this test.

A sweeper’s brush core is a consumable component whose life span will vary according to type and frequency of use. The smaller sweepers droop to one side when operated at an angle, so we recommend you periodically alternate the brush angle to keep bristle wear even and extend the life of the brush.

Your operating manual will give you specifics; try and be one of the exceptional folks who actually reads it! You’ll do well to maintain a written log of your usage in order to keep your maintenance on schedule.
